What’s the point of social media?

Why does your business even need social media? You hear about it constantly; that you need to interact and engage and build a genuine community. Algorithm changes are constant. What’s the point of even keeping up? You’re so busy running your business and serving the customers you have, why add another thing to your plate?

I can tell you right now that social media isn’t the golden key. You need to continue doing everything else in your business and serving your customers. However, social media is another piece of the puzzle to help your business.

One of the most obvious reasons is to get the word out about what you offer. It helps you reach people you wouldn’t be able to locally, at a conference or through who you already know. It lets you write the story about your business. It helps you explain how you can provide value to other businesses. It lets you connect.

Yes, it is true that social media is all about engagement. It will help you build a genuine community.  Each platform serves a different purpose, but that’s the beauty of it. You can find different people on each platform and build one big community. Social media is also another way to keep up with your customers. It helps you understand what they have going on and what they’re going through.  It lets you add value to their lives, even if you aren’t always selling them something.

In short, social media isn’t necessary, but can become an important piece of your business. It can take your offerings nationwide, or global. It does take time to build a genuine community, but if you stick with it and put in the work it will pay off dividends.
